I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair, honest review.
First I want to say that I absolute loved this book, enjoyed every second. I enjoyed the world building and the attention to detail that Michaela poured into this novel. I loved the bits of romance mixed into the paranormal/action nature of the book, especially that the romance was allowed to be there, but it didn't overwhelm the rest of the story.
I was immediately enamored of the book when I found it started with a glossary and a character reference sheet. The Greek words, which were thankfully translated into English in the glossary, were among the details I most enjoyed in the book.
The first piece of narrative is labeled "prologue"- another thing I'm a sucker for in books I like to read. Beginning with "Daddy's words..." led me to surmise that this was a flashback, a memory, probably from the main character nicknamed "Chevy." Soon the author does let us know that it's a memory, a bad dream. The story moved quickly from there in the most pleasing way. The dream sequences and flashbacks throughout were further enjoyable to me.
I don't like reviews that practically give away the whole book so I'll stop here, but in ending I will say that the attention to detail, the wonderfully paced action, the whole world we're asked to enter, makes this book a must read.
When NCS Operations officer Cheveyo Onida Singer's tries to rescue her kidnapped friend, Tony, she ends up opening up a can of worms with international implications. Her attempted rescue inadvertently uncovers the existence of the Zephyri - a nation of vampires, elves, shapeshifters, fairies, zombies, goblins, ogres, pixies and all manner of other supernatural creatures - who have kept their existence a secret for thousands of years. Through her adeventures, she must avert a zombie invasion, uncover a secret villain, sort out whether she herself is Zephyri, decide whom she can trust, and figure out whether she'd rather date a vampire, a fairy or no one at all!
Truth's Evil Light was an entertaining read, full of interesting plot twists, intrigue and characters with genuine depth and complexity. McGregor did a good job of painting a believable magic-filled society of mythical creatures. Their ways seem alien and in some cases out-dated to Chevy's short-lived human sensibilities, which is as it should be.
Throughout the book, the characters explore the concepts of justice, including the effectiveness of the criminal justice system, capital punishment and rehabilitation; racism and prejudice, pitting simple human prejudice against the Zephyri's condescension of shorter-lived, non-magical beings; and interestingly enough, original sin, unapologetically noting that man is depraved and tends to do his worst rather than his best.
There was one minor misconception I found in the book. She has a character saying the following
"Fear of the consequences is the sole reason that anyone acts contrary to their desires. Even the most devout Christian follows the teachings in the bible because of the consequences."
That's only partially true. 1 John 418 make the following comment "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in it." What that means is that fear is necessary to rule those who aren't motivated to obey out of love - which brings me to my obvious point The most devout Christian following the teachings of the Bible out of love for their Savior and His sacrifice on their behalf; fear of consequences might be a motivator for that belief but over time love eclipses fear [except for some really sad cases in the holiness and holiness-related fundamentalists sects].
Parents should be aware that there is a fair amount of cussing in this book [including F-bombs], as well as some sexual references and innuendo, which is a shame since her book's premise would definitely appeal to teens. There are also some disturbing scenes in the book dealing with torture, which are nonetheless essential to the book's themes.
Truth's Evil Light is well-written, engaging, thought-provoking and entertaining. McGregor has definitely given us something worth reading. Pick up your copy today!

I LOVE this book!!...And all the characters in it....my favorites being Kegan the Vampire (rouge) and Erax the Tsai....the writer showed how much they cared for the heroine in the book and left you wondering more about who Chevy really is ( I have my suspicions lol )!!
I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out!!!
